After buttoning up the last few items (like bolting up the steering shaft, the last few screws, and the throttle and cruise control wires) it was time for fluids.  I put coolant, engine oil, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid in the car.

 

 

For the first test, there were no spark plugs, just a few drops of oil in the spark plug holes, and I pulled the fuel pump relay.  This way we did not have spark or fuel, but this is an important test to see if there was oil pressure.

I was actually shaking with the gauge went up to 60 psi letting me know I had oil pressure in the system.

Next it was time to put the spark plugs back in, put the fuel pump relay back in, hold my breath, and hope that the last 6 months of work wasn’t all for naught.  Those hundreds of hours, … and everything was riding on the turn of the key ……

Belts are turned by the crankshaft.  The serpentine belt starts at the crank and spins the alternator, the power steering pump, the water pump, and the clutch fan (if you don’t have e fans).  The other belt is spun from the crankshaft and spins the AC compressor.

Installing the belts seems hard, but it really isn’t.  You just have to know the sequence of the belts.  Remember that you need to look at the RPO codes on the inside of your glove box to see what alternator you have which will determine which serpentine belt you need.

I had the Holley Tall Valve covers on the engine and in the car, but I ran into trouble when it came time to install the coils.  The stock coil bracket was no longer useable and the hole pattern from the pedestals on the new valve covers were different than my stock ones.

The whole reason for buying the Holley Tall Valve covers was because my Comp Cams 1.72 roller rockers were too tall for the stock valve covers.  Since I had to take the valve covers off, it was a good time to paint them.  I bought the cheapest option from Holley and I never really liked the way they looked.
After 3 coats of Chevy Orange and 3 coats of clear, I was ready to start on some custom brackets to get the coils to mount on the valve covers.  Apparently MSD makes some coils with the mounting holes 72 mm apart, but I had already dropped serious money in some genuine AC Delco replacements which had the mounting holes to fit the stock coil bracket.

So I had to drill larger holes in the mounting holes of the coils and I made my brackets out of a strip of $4 aluminum that I bought at Lowes, and slapped them on.  I think they look pretty good, all things considered.

Here is a somewhat exhaustive review of all the wires & sensors I could name for anyone who didn’t have anything as a reference.
 
I also show the wire loom that goes at the front of the oil pan and comes across to the passenger side that gets affixed to the oil pan on the passenger side.
 
The throttle body is easy, just 3 bolts and a couple of sensors (don’t forget the gasket)!  Then I attach the EVAP to the top of the intake manifold and its associated screws and sensor.

I did not button everything up because I will still be doing an oil catch can later.

Next came the water pump.  It was 6 bolts and very easy to put on.  Don’t forget your gaskets!

The AC compressor is heavy and awkward so you might be inclined to do the easiest bolts first which are the 3 on top.  That’s how I started.  But then I didn’t have enough wiggle room to get the 2 lower bolts in.

I started over with the hardest one, which was the front bottom one.  These bolts are LONG and they are hard to get in there because of a big piece of steering/suspension (I’m still not sure) equipment.  The only way I could get the front one bolted up was by hanging a ratcheting wrench on the bolt, inserting it, and then torquing it down.  Then I could get the wrench out.  If you find another way, please feel free to comment as I am sure it will be helpful.

I took a lot of care to make sure the front timing cover and rear covers were on correctly, and within specification. Without a proper seal all the way around, oil leaks are inevitable, so I went slow and cautiously.

One thing I realized is that I forgot to drill out the rivets on the oil pan and had to do this carefully as I had already painted and had the oil pan cleaned at the machine shop. I did not want to get any metal from the drilling into the pan so I triple taped the thing up and that took some time, but the peace of mind was worth it. On went the gasket and the oil pan and I started to feel like I was making some progress with the engine rebuild.

Vacuum and Compression Tests, Spark Plug Removal & Flowmaster 50 Series Sound Check – Chevy Tahoe 5.3 Vortec Engine – Video 1

So, I was getting ready to disconnect the negative battery cable on my 2002 Chevy Tahoe 5.3 Vortec to replace the water pump, timing chain, and do a cam swap.  I got to thinking, if I am gonna do a cam swap, what about the short block (pistons, connecting rods, crank shaft, mains, bearings, etc.)?  I thought, “what if I do the cam swap and I have a problem with piston rings next year, I would be pissed”.

I got on Google and started researching.  I discovered that I could test the bottom end with a compression test of the cylinders.  So prior to tearing into the engine, I decided to do a compression test of all the cylinders, and added a vacuum test to the mix, just ‘cause.

At this point, I removed the spark plugs to do the compression test.  Essentially, the compression test gauge screws into the spark plug hole for each cylinder.  Here is something I learned much later in the series:   If you are planning to tear into your engine quite a bit, i found that raising the car (supporting it by sturdy jack stands, of course) taking off the front wheels, and removing the wheel well plastic piece gives very nice access to the spark plug holes.  Both the compression test and the vacuum tests went well with my engine.  I felt comfortable knowing that the vacuum pressure was good, and that with 180-200 psi in all 8 cylinders, I could get away with not completely removing the engine and doing the short block.

I also wanted to benchmark one other thing.  I recently put in a Flowmaster 50 Series Delta Flow exhaust and I wanted to get a before and after comparison sound test.  I included the “before” in this first video

So, here’s the start of my long journey.  I will be the first to admit, I’ve never done this before and I don’t know what I’m doing.  But in today’s Internet world with Google and YouTube, and armed with an old fashion Haynes Directory – I felt comfortable knowing that if I got stuck, help was a click away.  Here we go ……..
