Moving My Garage Door Opener from the Center was the result of a list install salesman saying, “Oh yeah, we can get a lift in there without you having to move your garage door opener. As it turns out, he was either not being honest, not too smart, or just didnt care. When the installers got here on install day, they took one look at it and said, ” You’re gonna have to move that thing over”.
So, after doing some research to see if it was possible, and if it was safe, I determined that it’s not really that big of a deal and I went for it. Turned out pretty good. Go to weld for the first time in my life and now I can take full advantage of my lift.
Hey Steve here coming to you from the garage again and today I want to talk to you about my garage door. And the reason why I want to talk to you about my garage door is because for those of you who follow the channel know that when I put the lift in my existing garage door opener was in the way of the truck being able to be raised to any decent level so it needed to go. So, I got on phone and called a couple garage door specialists the first one told me that he recommended putting in one of those side loaders which I thought was a fantastic idea until he told me that it was gonna be probably in the neighborhood of $1100 maybe more maybe less so I told him thank you very much. I went on my merry way thought about some more, called a second guy and the second guy said that’s probably gonna be about $600 but then you know we’ve got to do the keypad outside, you’ll get charged for the remotes and then of course there’s the button near the door to the house and it could be a lot more is what he said. So, I told him thank you very much and I got off the phone and I thought about it some more and I called the third guy. And I asked the third guy I said hey is it possible to take my existing garage door motor and just move it over a foot or 2? And he said oh no he said you don’t want to do that. He says but you can get one of them side loaders and I’ll be more than happy to install for you for about $1,500 and I said thank you very much and I hung up with him.
So, then I think about it some more and I decided to have a heart-to-heart with my garage door and I asked my garage door, I said, “Garage Door do you care where you get lifted from”? And the garage door told me as long as the springs were set up right and that it was balanced correctly it didn’t really care where it was raised from. So, I listened to my garage door and I decided to reposition the motor mechanism about 15, 16 inches over so that I could enjoy the benefits of a garage door and enjoy the benefits of the lift at the same time.
So, if you’re of the belief that a garage door opener cannot be off-centered and you want to yell at me in the comments that’s perfectly okay. But to be perfectly honest with you I can afford $1000 to put into a new garage door it’s just not in the cards for me right now and I need to fix my wife’s car so I got to do what I got to do and in this particular case I got to just fix it myself and get this engine into my wife’s car.
So, that’s that; here’s some of the video I took from the whole procedure. It was relatively easy, relatively seamless. The hardest part was just being so high up on the ladder. I’m a little nervous about heights and that was a little unsettling for me but as far as the difficulty of the procedure I would give it a difficulty of 4 on a 10 scale. I think anybody could do it. So, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to relocate your garage door opener just go ahead and do it but if you have the means to do so I think you probably is a better idea to get one of them their side loaders, drop some cash into it and be on your way.
So, how am I gonna relocate this garage door opener? Well I’ve got some metal here and essentially what I want to do is I think I’ll remove this and I’ll weld a plate right here that comes all the way over here and then maybe drop another piece of metal down there for extra support and then basically recouple that to here and then manually move everything else over so that’s my thought. So, this is tentatively my plan to have that bar there, another bar coming across like that. That’s the tentative plan.
All right, I made a little progress. That has been moved over o I don’t know afoot or so, it was right there dead center and I moved it over as far as I could. Right there the front wheel the bike is touching it but no big deal. Anybody with welding experience I will tell you I’ve never welded before in my entire life but there’s my new bracket and I won’t give you a close-up of the weld so that you can’t pick on me about it because it’s really bad. But hey you got to start somewhere that’ll be the new bracket of course I’ll paint it but I got another what is that 2×6 anchored up there but if I measure correctly this dude right here is in perfect alignment with this dude right here. I measured a bunch of times so I’m sure I got it wrong. With the 2×6 anchored up there let’s talk about this guy right here and see if he lines up. Then I’ll have to fix my little metal bar thing the hole right there to the garage door there and to the garage door there and that’s that.
All right so I put the finishing touches on this garage door move situation and essentially there it is it’s moved over. It was right there and I moved it over probably 15, 16 inches something like that and now it goes like this and the lineup is not perfect but pretty darn good. But as you can see the center line in the garage it is definitely moved over quite ways and now I can get a car on the left.
So, if offsetting your garage door opener is something that you need to do or want to do forego having to spend the money on one of those side loader units and just move your existing one and that’s that.
